Susan and John are new grandparents to twin girls. They have five boys that are all grown up and this was a chance for everybody to relax and spend time together. Blondel Cove Villa provided the ideal location for this multi-generational family.
One of the important things for this active grandma was to make sure she had an updated family portrait. The last time they had a family photo was 20 years ago and so much had changed and grown with their family. Susan arranged a portrait session before coming to the island. It gave us a chance to help guide her on how to prepare for such a special session. For example, we helped her with ideas for what to wear so she could get her group of eleven to dress in colors that were coordinated. Everybody in a family portrait does not need to have exactly matching colors but it’s helpful if there’s a theme or some type of coordination. Outfit choice for a large family is helpful because it makes sure that the entire family unit is visually very cohesive in the look. If some family members are in pastel colors and other family members are in dark black or bold patterns, the eye can go to the areas of a high contrast. What this means in a family photo is that it can be distracting if an outfit or clothing choice stands out more than the entire family unit or smiling faces. Susan planned well and when we showed up, we did a brief consultation before beginning the pictures.
Photographing all the Family Groups
We wanted to make sure we were getting everything that was important to Susan. She emphasized that the most important thing for her was a full family photo with everyone together. She loved the inside of the villa so we took some photos inside the villa showcasing the staircase and entryway. The lush green tropical landscaping around the villa is a beautiful backdrop so we took couples, individual and more family photos there. We incorporated an ocean background to show the turquoise ocean water while being able to keep everyone in the shade so they wouldn’t squint.
We also did small breakouts of her sons, their wives, and families to make sure each of the children were photographed as well as all of the generations. A favorite photo for the multi-generational portrait is always the grandkids and grandparents so made that a priority. We are so happy that Susan was pleased with her pictures and that we had such a beautiful location to create gorgeous photo memories that the family will cherish forever.
