There is something truly magnetic about a bucket list dream coming to fruition. For Michelle, the vibrant, crystalline waters of the Turks and Caicos were not just a destination. They represented a long held aspiration. When she stepped off the cruise ship onto the sun drenched shores of Grand Turk, she was not just checking a box. Instead, she was bringing her family into her dream vacation destination. Accompanying her were her two adult children, her son Blayton’s partner, Kelsey, and the most precious addition to the group – her baby granddaughter.
As a team that lives and breathes the beauty of these islands, we felt that excitement radiating from them the moment we connected. While many travelers flock to the bustling energy of Providenciales, there is a soulful, untouched magic to Grand Turk, the capital island. It offers an authentic island rhythm where wild donkeys roam freely, market stalls hum with local craft, and the beach bars serve up a side of relaxation you cannot find anywhere else. For Blayton and Kelsey, this would be the perfect stage for a day that would change their lives forever.
Planning a Secret in Paradise
The logistics of a cruise ship stop are always a bit of a whirlwind. At the various ports, you often only have one day to soak up a lifetime of memories. Behind the scenes, we had been working closely with Michelle, who was helping her son plan the perfect moment, long before their ship even left the United States. While the family was excited for a tropical excursion, Blayton had a much more monumental mission in mind. He was planning to propose to Kelsey, and he wanted every detail captured against the backdrop of the world’s most beautiful ocean.
On the morning of their arrival, one of our photographers flew into Grand Turk Island from Provo, landing just as cruise ship guests began to disembark to explore for the day. We met the family at the entrance of the cruise ship terminal, where the day was already heating up into a beautiful blue sky, blue water day. They had prebooked a golf buggy, the most fun way to traverse Grand Turk, and they followed us in our rental car. We did not have to travel far to find what we were looking for. We soon arrived at a stretch of white sand so pristine it felt like a private sanctuary, framed by that iconic, bright turquoise water.
Capturing the Family Connection
We began the session by focusing on the entire family, just like the start of a family portrait session. We moved through different combinations, capturing the laughter of the brothers, the pride in Michelle’s eyes, and the sheer joy of the little baby in her sweet outfit. She was beaming throughout the morning, a tiny bundle of happiness who will one day look at these photos to see the magic she was a part of, even if she cannot remember it now.
The atmosphere was light and playful with just a hint of anticipation in the air from those who knew what was about to happen!
The Moment Kelsey Said Yes
While Michelle held her baby granddaughter, providing a distraction, we directed Blayton and Kelsey into the opportunity for a few couple’s photos. This was where Blayton seized his window. In a seamless transition from looking at the camera, he turned to Kelsey and dropped to one knee on the soft sand.
The expression on Kelsey’s face was magic. It was a mix of pure surprise, overwhelming joy, and deep love. We were able to candidly catch every moment of the transformation from a girlfriend to a fiancée. She was absolutely thrilled, and the cheers from the family echoed across the quiet beach. It is moments like these that remind us why we do what we do. It is about more than just a photograph. It is about freezing a feeling in time so it never fades.
Blayton had even brought along a few thoughtful props to help announce their news. They held a sign together that read “Kelsey said yes,” while a bright pink towel nearby announced that “Mummy said yes” for the little one. It was a perfectly curated celebration of their new chapter as a family of three.
Exploring the Hidden Gems of Grand Turk
Once the initial excitement of the proposal had settled, we took the newly engaged couple on an adventure of their own. Because we are already familiar with the secret corners of Grand Turk, we knew exactly where to go to give them a variety of looks for their engagement portraits.
We continued our journey in the car, seeking out locations that highlight the beauty of the island. One of these spots was an old wooden dock that stretched out over the water. This provided a textured and rustic backdrop for their photos against the turquoise ocean. To add an even more cinematic feel to their gallery, they had opted for the drone package. Seeing the couple from above, two small figures surrounded by an endless expanse of blue, really put the scale of their love and the location into perspective.
We even managed to find a few of the island’s famous residents – the roaming donkeys. It added such a spontaneous and authentic touch to the session as they posed with them before we headed back toward another quiet, romantic stretch of beach. These final moments of the session were about the two of them reflecting on the life they are building together.
A Day to Cherish Forever
As the time approached for Blayton and Kelsey to return to their family who had found a beach bar to hang out at, we left the couple with great big smiles and incredible memories that we hope they will cherish for years to come as they re-tell their proposal story!
It was such a pleasure meeting this wonderful family and for Blayton’s mom, Michelle, who had finally realized her vacation dream. It became the place where her family grew and where a new legacy began. We are so happy to have played a small part in that story.
