Ali and her husband came to Turks and Caicos to celebrate their ten-year wedding anniversary. They’ve been to other Caribbean islands, but they wanted to do something special, so they booked a trip for the first time to the Ritz-Carlton Resort located on beautiful Grace Bay beach.
When Ali reached out to Paradise Photography, we knew this would be an important photo session for them both. They got married in a destination wedding but sadly Ali didn’t love her wedding photos. She said they were awkward and unnatural. We often have clients that come to us after they’ve had photos they didn’t love from a previous session. The most common complaint is that they didn’t feel natural or they didn’t like what the photographer was having them do or maybe they weren’t given enough direction.
Getting Great Portraits
A good photographer will always communicate with his or her subject to make small refinements to get the best possible picture. The camera lens sees things differently, so depending on the height of the camera or the angle the photos are taken, various adjustments need to be made with the subject to get the most pleasing image. For example, whatever object appears closer to the camera is larger than what appears further back. Therefore, we always want to make sure to place our ladies, so they do not appear larger in any photos. We have lots of professional training to know what angles look best for our female clients. What a person is wearing can also affect whether certain “poses” are suitable. For example, if a client has a tight fitted skirt or dress, we might not have them sitting in the sand because the outfit could be too short.
Special Portrait Session
We took extra special care with our consultation with Ali to find out what she liked and disliked and what she wanted to do with the photos after the session. During this consultation with Ali, we made sure to understand the look that she was wanting. She liked a very natural style of photo, so we kept things very relaxed. Taking the time to have a conversation with our clients prior to beginning any portrait session is super helpful, both for the client and for the photographer. Knowing what a client wants as an outcome helps the photographer to create photos that will be loved. For example, if a client wants a photo book, we often do a variety of series style images or close up photos. For a wall portrait, we would make the subject slightly smaller so it’s more scenic for when the image is enlarged.
Ali ended up loving her photos so much that she ordered canvases of her favorites to put around her home.
